Research Interests
His research interests include Rehabilitation Engineering Science and Vascular Electronics. To date he has co-authored >40 peer-reviewed international biomedical engineering journal papers. He has supervised/co-supervised 10 PhD students and 8 research masters students. Leader of the Bioelectronics Research Cluster in National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES)

Biography
A native of Ennis, Co. Clare, Prof. Gearóid ÓLaighin graduated with a B.E. degree (first class honours) in Electrical Engineering from University College Cork in 1980. In 1982 he obtained the M.Eng.Sc. degree from UCC for thesis work carried out at the National Microelectronics Research Centre. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree at the National University of Ireland, Galway in 2000. The title of his Ph.D. thesis was: Dynamic Correction of Hemiplegic Drop Foot using Functional Electrical Stimulation. Prof. Ó Laighin has a range of industrial experience including periods when he worked in United States as a Product Engineer of high-speed static RAMS at Integrated Device Technology, Inc., Salinas, California from 1985 to 1987 and as a Design Engineer of Complex Logic Products at Integrated Device Technology, Inc., Santa Clara, California from 1987 to 1990. Prior to his appointment as Professor of Electronic Engineering at the National University of Ireland, Galway, Prof. ÓLaighin was a Senior Lecturer in Electronic Engineering and Assistant Dean, Research for the College of Informatics and Electronics at the University of Limerick. He was also founding Director of the Biomedical Electronics Laboratory at UL. Prof. ÓLaighin is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland, a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET) and Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (SMIEEE). Prof. ÓLaighin is a Fulbright Scholar and a member of the Irish Fulbright Alumni Association. He is a referee for several biomedical engineering journals and a member of the Editorial Board of Medical Engineering and Physics.
